Dale Cook

Our musical community lost a friend and colleague to a freak accident.  Drummer Dale Cook played with Peter Nero and Doc Severinsen, among others.  He was a first call session player, and can still be heard on many familiar sports themes, network production tracks, and ads.  Upon reflection I realized that he played on every one of my recording sessions over a 35 year period.  He delivered the life, the soul, and the groove - no matter the style of music.  A consummate practical joker, he had a wonderfully mischevious sense of humor.  A great talent, a great guy, and a great loss. The music lives on.

James, I have been a close friend of Dale's since 1968 and was so saddened to hear of his passing. You mentioned a "freak accident" in your moving dedication to him. I am aware Dale had a heart condition for the last few years, but did not hear about any accident. I spoke with his wife, Siggy, by phone shortly after Dale passed and she gave no indication of an accident. Yes, Dale had a great sense of humor and he and I verbally sparred many times. The last time I spoke with him by phone, I mentioned that an old Air Force band mate had mentioned Dale to another friend on the internet by describing him as "that swinging drummer from Dallas". I told Dale the guy MEANT to say "that SINGING drummer from Dallas". That was the last time I heard that exuberant laugh of Dale's. I really miss him.
